What is Sclerotherapy?
If spider veins or reticular veins are making you feel self-conscious, sclerotherapy can be used to reduce or eliminate their appearance. Typically clustered into small groups of red veins, and often in the shape of a web, spider veins are a common condition that can manifest in many areas of the body, including:
- Lower legs
- Ankles
- Calves
- Thighs
Conversely, reticular veins are usually slightly larger than spider veins and often appear blue or purple in color. Both spider veins and reticular veins can cause embarrassment when wearing clothing such as shorts, skirts, sandals, or swimsuits. This minimally invasive treatment can be an effective way to regain your confidence and achieve smoother, more even, and younger-looking skin.

Is Sclerotherapy right for me?
If you are bothered by the appearance of spider veins and reticular veins on your skin, sclerotherapy may be an effective treatment option for reaching your cosmetic goals. An injection of saline into the affected veins can safely cause them to collapse and disappear. It should be noted, however, that sclerotherapy cannot be used to treat varicose veins. During the consultation process, our skin care experts can help you make an informed decision about whether sclerotherapy is right for you.
How long does Sclerotherapy treatment take to complete?
Depending upon the number, size, and placement of the affected veins, the average sclerotherapy treatment time will vary. For some patients, treatment can be completed in as little as ten minutes. Others may require a treatment session that lasts up to 45 minutes.
What results can I expect from Sclerotherapy?
Though results may vary from patient to patient, most men and women are satisfied with the rejuvenated appearance of their skin after a single treatment. Sclerotherapy can remove both spider and reticular veins from the body, though in some cases the veins may lighten in appearance rather than fully disappear. In some cases, a second treatment will be recommended 4-6 weeks after the initial treatment to maximize results and fully achieve the patient’s expectations.
How does Sclerotherapy work?
Using a very fine needle, sclerotherapy works by injecting a saline solution into the affected veins of the body. This saline solution closes off the veins and, in turn, these veins collapse. After treatment, the appearance of your spider or reticular veins can be greatly diminished—or even disappear entirely.
Is Sclerotherapy painful?
Patients will likely experience an initial pinprick sensation at the injection site. Some patients may also experience mild discomfort during the sclerotherapy treatment, though this discomfort should be minimal.
Are there any side effects from Sclerotherapy?
Common side effects from sclerotherapy treatment may include: redness, swelling, tenderness, itching, or bruising. Side effects can vary from patient to patient. During your initial consultation, one of our aesthetic professionals will conduct a physical examination, review your medical history, and give you a complete list of potential side effects based on your condition. After treatment, all patients are recommended to wear a compression garment that can aid in the recovery process.
How long should I wear the compression garment after my Sclerotherapy treatment?
You can purchase a compression garment for your sclerotherapy treatment recovery right at our office. To optimize your results, our team recommends wearing the compression garment for two or three days after spider vein treatment. For reticular vein treatment, we recommend wearing the compression garment for five to seven days.
What can I expect during the recovery from Sclerotherapy?
During your recovery, our team recommends avoiding activities that could potentially interfere with the healing process for a minimum of two weeks, such as: hot baths, saunas, rigorous exercise, or long plane flights.
How much do Sclerotherapy treatments cost?
The exact cost of sclerotherapy varies from patient to patient and is dependent upon a number of factors, including the number of affected veins as well as the location. During your one-on-one consultation, your aesthetic professional can give you a personalized quote for your sclerotherapy treatment. Patient seeking treatment for multiple areas of the body may receive a discounted rate.
